Imports are the answer in a tight organic produce landscape
Greater shopper demand for organic fruits and vegetables and recent declines in domestic acreage devoted to organic commodities is fueling demand for selections from abroad, reports the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA’s) Economic Research Service (ERS). Imports remain strong for commodities that are not suitable for production in much of the U.S., such as bananas and other tropical fruits; selections that are grown domestically but whose demand surpasses supply, including soybeans; and to keep supply constant during the off-season for such items as blueberries, the ERS notes. Retailers are receiving such selections as vegetables, greenhouse items, berries and avocados from Mexico and Canada; berries and grapes from Peru and Chile; and bananas, mangos, pineapples and other tropical fruit from Central America and South America, said John Foster, chief operating officer of Wolf & Associates Inc. – The Organic Specialists, a New Castle, Virginia-based organic industry consulting firm.
