Sales of watermelon drop in Kashmir due to reports

Astonishing turn to events, typically lively market for watermelon in Kashmir is experiencing a dramatic slowdown, as sales have dropped in alarming proportions of 50 percent. The sharp drop is attributed to many rumors of the use of toxic chemicals during the process of cultivation. Local residents, who are usually enthusiastic about the favorite summer food, has been discouraged by the claims that the watermelon are artificially ripened with carcinogenic chemicals.

The majority of fruit sellers throughout Srinagar city and the other districts of the valley are concerned. They attributed the decline in sales to an unsubstantiated claims made of a doctor that suggests watermelons have ripened earlier than other fruits. “We are selling watermelons for many years and have earned an impressive amount of cash however, ever since the rumor concerning the artificial ripening of watermelons have spread, customers are reluctant to purchase the fruits,” said one vendor.

Kashmir Observer earlier stated earlier that Food Safety Drugs & Food Control Organization, Kashmir Division is directing the responsible officials to conduct thorough market inspections of the fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as other food items, in addition to the tasting. While the food industry is navigating through these difficult times it is focusing on dispelling myths and making sure that people are aware of the security and high quality of the products they sell.
