A multi-faceted challenge

Low efficacy

The length of a multiple-linked (fragmented) distribution chain means that more time was at the nodes to negotiate. It affected the mobility of supply chains and reduced overall efficiency of logistics. This increased the duration of transportation for items that is as crucial like cherries.

Information Asymmetry

The many links in the supply chain disrupted circulation of information. The information that was available across the various linkages, was not available to all stakeholders. The visibility of the supply chain was poor since different links couldn’t cooperate with each other. This is why the supply chain was unable to respond to changes in demand quickly. Lack of coordination between all the connections made the whole supply chain vulnerable to bottlenecks.

In the absence of a customized solution

The logistics market in general offered regularised goods. The absence of a solution which met the needs of clients at a certain moment, and on a certain way, and limited optimization of the supply chain.

Simply put, our client couldn’t know the condition of cherries at the time of their arrival in China.
