ICAR estimates that 20% mango crop loss because of untimely rains and hail.

According to a top ICAR official, rains that are not timed storms, hailstorms and powerful wind gusts have resulted in around 20 percentage of India’s mango crop to become damaged. The mango growers have reported massive destruction caused by hailstorms and storms in North India.

The mango is a major cultivar of horticulture in India and accounts for almost 42% of the global mango production. In the past, unseasonal rains, hailstorms and gusty wind triggered by the western disturbances have impacted horticulture and grains in different regions across the country in the last few days.

“The first rains didn’t impact the mango plantations However, the later rains, as well as hail storms caused severe damage to the mango plantation. According to the Deputy Director General (Horticulture) A K Singh from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), “As of today, we expect that total loss to approximately 20 20%.”

Mango crop losses have happened most frequently within North India, particularly in Uttar Pradesh which is India’s most prolific mango producing state. He said that the loss expected from the mango harvest within North India alone will be over 30%. However the case for South India, the damage is less than percent. The states have yet to receive new data.
