A mulcher with a mini-mulcher ideal for hazelnut groves

In recent years, hazelnut-growing areas have been expanding in Italy, with modern, professionally managed plantations. One of the primary concerns for hazelnut growers is weed control. Having phased out synthetic chemicals (partly because herbicides are not permitted under the specifications of various industries), most producers have opted for mechanical mowing.

“We’re receiving a huge number of enquiries about mulching for hazelnut orchards from various regions,” reports Alessandro Calderoni, owner of the Forlì-based company Calderoni Rolando. “Not only in Italy, but also from Eastern Europe. A combination that is highly sought after is the multi-purpose mulcher with a side-mounted mini-mulcher. In some cases, as shown in the video above, mulchers are paired with a disc mower.”

Growers want mulchers that shred everything perfectly, so that, at harvesting time, the machine collecting the hazelnuts can find a flat, clear surface.

“In recent weeks, we carried out trials in Cherasco, taking part in a technical workshop. According to farmers and technicians, the results were very positive and satisfactory. The mulcher with mini-mulcher made it possible to shred everything right down to the tree canopies,” continues Calderoni.

The mulcher with mini-mulcher has the following features: a rear roller with a self-levelling system that adapts to the ground, a hydraulic plant clearance mechanism, and a lever with a steel cable for manual emergency retraction. It guarantees a high working speed even in dense plantations, mulching the prunings beneath the plant. There are no problems with stones or rocks, as it self-levels to compensate for uneven ground.
