UN proclaims the 30th of May to be ‘International Day for the potato’

The United Nations has taken the choice to declare May 30th as the “International Day of the potato’. The day will be a year-long celebration.

The UN resolution has been enthusiastically applauded from those in the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the UN The initiative could be viewed as a chance to increase the awareness of a crop that is regularly consumed by millions of people. This annual celebration was led by Peru who presented a plan for the an adoption by the UN General Assembly, based on a FAO Conference Resolution of July 7th 2023.

“This International [Potato] Day will highlight its significant importance to the potato in terms of nutrition, ecological, economic as well as cultural” FAO deputy director-general, Beth Bechdol said. “It will also draw attention to the importance of potatoes to food security in the world in reducing poverty and improving the existence of millions of people, as well as highlighting the importance of indigenous peoples’ wisdom and customs.”
