“There has been no significant gap between the two sweet potato seasons”

With only a very small gap, it seems like the previous sweet potato season in Egypt has almost merged into the next one, says Gehan Elsherif, executive manager of G Fresh Export & Import: “The previous sweet potato season has practically come to an end, with only small remaining volumes that are not considered significant. The new season is expected to start in about two weeks. This year has been quite unusual, because there has been no significant gap between the two seasons. Due to the large acreage planted this year, supplies have remained available for a much longer period than usual, making it feel as though the season has continued seamlessly into the new one.”

According to Elsherif, the higher supply was the result of sweet potato acreage expansion. “The total volumes have been higher than in previous years. The larger crop resulted in a very high supply, which has kept sweet potatoes widely available in the market. Production was higher during the 2026 season because many growers expanded their sweet potato acreage. This was mainly a response to the lower production in the previous season, which encouraged farmers to plant larger areas.”

“Demand has remained stable, with no major changes compared to previous seasons. Our main focus continues to be the European market, while exports to the Gulf remain limited. At the moment, there are no export protocols in place that would allow us to access additional markets. We expect the new season to be stable, with good product quality and steady demand. We also hope to strengthen our presence in our existing markets and continue building long-term relationships with our customers,” Elsherif concludes.
