Samurai wasps released to protect orchards in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan has begun releasing samurai wasps in the Zagatala and Balakan districts as part of a biological control program against the brown marmorated stink bug, one of the most harmful pests affecting orchards and fields. The initiative is being carried out by the Agrarian Services Agency under the Ministry of Agriculture of Azerbaijan with support from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

Azerbaijani and foreign specialists are overseeing the releases and monitoring results in the field. The wasps were reared in laboratory conditions by specialists from the Agrarian Services Agency. The approach may later be expanded to other parts of the country where the pest is causing serious agricultural damage.

Samurai wasps target the stink bug at the egg stage by laying their eggs inside its egg masses, preventing further reproduction. This allows the pest population to be reduced naturally and lowers the need for chemical insecticides.

According to specialists, the method is among the safest and most environmentally friendly forms of crop protection, causing no harm to people, animals or plants while helping maintain the natural balance. The program is being implemented with reference to international experience and with the participation of invited experts from Turkey.

Releases are carried out only after analysis of local conditions and monitoring data on the pest’s spread. Experts say the use of modern biological protection methods can help preserve fruit, nut and vegetable harvests while making Azerbaijani agriculture more sustainable, environmentally friendly and competitive.
