Kazakhstani farmers test new watermelon variety Nomad in Turkestan region

Farmers in the Zhetysai district of Kazakhstan’s Turkestan region are testing several new watermelon varieties as they respond to changing market demand, including rising interest in oval-shaped fruit.

This season, local growers are producing seven watermelon varieties, including Victoria, Zarabina, Inception, and Nuray. The seeds were brought in from the United States, the Netherlands, and Turkey. According to Berdiyar Padash, director of a farming enterprise, producers are also importing seeds of varieties that have not yet been fully studied and are currently identified only by conditional numbers as part of ongoing research work.

One of the new varieties under trial is Nomad, a watermelon of U.S. origin that has been adapted to local climatic conditions. It was initially registered only under a number and kept in U.S. archives as an experimental sample. Farmers in Zhetysai gave it the name Nomad.

The variety is intended for early production, is resistant to sharp temperature changes, and is suitable for transport. It has a round shape, a dark green rind, and high sugar content.

Testing of new varieties is carried out over several years. Farmers monitor product quality, sugar content, shelf life, and market demand before deciding whether to expand plantings.
