At Fruit Logistica 2026, Ocean Network Express (ONE) highlighted its growing role in global fresh produce transport. “Our distinctive magenta colour… represents our heritage,” says Jan Holst. “That Japanese background shows in how we approach quality, reliability, and customer service.” Founded in 2017, ONE has become the world’s sixth-largest liner shipping company. For fresh produce, scale is less important than specialised equipment. “We have one of the largest controlled atmosphere (CA) fleets worldwide,” adds Patrick Borghgraef.

Modern fleet and global positioning
ONE’s relatively young fleet is a key advantage. “We invest heavily… adding between 5,000 and 15,000 reefer units every year,” Patrick explains. “For fresh produce, you want equipment that simply works.” Positioning that equipment globally is complex. “You need to follow the seasons,” he says, citing shifts from bananas to grapes. Dedicated flow management teams ensure containers are in the right place at the right time. A major milestone came in 2021, when ONE completed its global network loop. “We can now operate in a full circle across the world,” Jan says, improving efficiency and supporting seasonal trade flows.

Reliability and customer service
Punctuality is critical. “Being on time is a very high priority for us,” Jan stresses. Local teams also play a key role. “Customers can speak to someone who understands their business,” Patrick adds. Digitalisation supports both reliability and transparency. ONE’s Remote Monitoring System Container+ allows customers to track location, temperature, and conditions in real time. “That is particularly important for fresh produce,” Jan says.
Digitalisation and AI
Data from containers is also used internally. “We can predict when a container needs maintenance before a failure occurs,” Patrick explains, highlighting predictive maintenance as a key benefit. AI is expected to play a growing role in flow management and data analysis, although applications are still being explored.

Sustainability ambitions
ONE aims to reach net zero by 2050. “With every new vessel… we look at how we can move away from fossil fuels,” Jan says. Initiatives include alternative fuels and customer solutions like emission-reduction programs.
Market dynamics and outlook
Despite a quarterly loss in 2025 due to overcapacity, ONE remains focused on fresh produce. Network adjustments have improved transit times on some routes. Geopolitical risks, such as the Suez Canal, require caution. At the same time, climate change and shifting consumption patterns are creating new trade flows. “Importers are spreading their risk,” Patrick notes. “The market is constantly evolving,” he concludes. “You have to react quickly.” (JG)
