China is losing ground in the race to Egypt on African markets

The Egyptian garlic harvest is scheduled to close by the middle of September. In the words of Mohamed Shaaban, General Manager of Garlico Egypt, the exporters are thrilled with the exceptional period of garlic.

Shaaban explained, “We have almost exhausted the stock we have in our warehouse following a period with a very large demand. It’s increasingly difficult to find quality garlic at the close of the season. However, we are able to continue to provide markets with low-quality garlic that can be used for industrial purposes like peeling, grinding, and drying.”

The company’s producer says “The 2023 Egyptian garlic season was very thrilling. The quantity of orders we received was higher than the two previous seasons together. But, the volume is only 60% of the volume of the prior season. In the end, the exports were higher than the previous year, compared to those sold on the local market. In Garlico Egypt, we sold 50% more garlic than the previous year, and we are proud to say that we’re one of the top three Egyptian exporters of garlic for the year”.

According to Shaaban Shaaban, the increase in the demand of Egyptian garlic is due to the absence of competitors. “Our Chinese, Argentinean, and Spanish rivals didn’t produce large amounts this year, so their prices have gone up. The cost of Chinese garlic was even higher than 300 USD per ton. This was the first time we export our garlic to a variety of African markets before been supplied through China including Nigeria, South Africa, and Angola.”

“Taiwan as well as Brazil have also shown higher market demand compared to last year’s. In contrast there was a slowdown in there was a slowdown in European, Australian, and American markets were more sluggish as compared to the norm.”

A high demand and a limited supply are causing a rise in Egyptian prices for garlic According to Shaaban. “Prices began at an average rate at the beginning of the season. However, just a few months later, they were at 50 percent. Price increases continued in the course of the season, and supply of quality garlic became scarce.”

“Overall it’s the most successful season we’ve seen over the last few times. Therefore, we expect the volume of acreage to grow and volume for the 2024 March collection,” Shaaban concludes. Shaaban.
