Prices of onion, tomatoes and potatoes rise in Dhaka market

In Dhaka The cost of onions, vegetables and potatoes has risen. With the exception of some items that are priced higher, prices for the majority of vegetables was more than Tk80 per kilogram. In particular, teasel gourd was listed at Tk 120. Also, a variety of other vegetables like bitter gourd, long-yard beans country beans as well as sponge gourd and snake gourd were priced between Tk 80 to 100 per kilogram which represents an increase by Tk 10-20 a kg in 5 days.

Brinjal is available at Tk 70 to 100 per kilogram according to the quality, and moringa cost between Tk 140 to 180 per kilogram. Papaya is usually one of the most inexpensive vegetables, has reached record levels that ranged from Tk 75-85 for a kilogram, due to the increased consumption during warmer temperatures.

Dulal Patwary, a merchant at the wholesale market of Rayerbazar-Beribandh, observed that the demand for papayas is now at a record high because of the hot weather, even though supply remains steady. The wholesale cost of papaya increased from Tk 38-45 up to Tk 68-70 for a kilogram within 2 weeks. Patwary further stated the fact that production of vegetables in the summer season is impacted by the absence of rain in various districts over the course of a month. This has led to more expensive farm prices than the previous year. In addition, the cost of locally grown seasonal onions has increased by 5-10 Tk, with the price now being around Tk 70-85 for a kilogram.
