“Prices of limes are through the roof of Ecuador”

Producers from Ecuador have seen price for limes that is “through the sky”. This is the opinion of David Velez, sales manager of Ecuadorian exporter Roses & Fresh Fruits by Ayelen Living Memories. But, demand on international marketplaces for exotic fruits which comprise granadillas, pineapples as well as yellow dragon fruits are somewhat lower in the present, he claims.

The man says they have Tahiti limes that are available at expensive costs in Ecuador. “We are able to offer Tahiti limes, and the prices are astronomical in Ecuador because the kg cost exceeds $2.62. There is also Meyer lemons, which are sold for a slightly lower price per kg, which is $1.70. In Ecuador prices are expensive because there’s no manufacturing at present.”

“The pineapple harvest is beginning to grow in the present. Cost per kilogram is approximately $0.75 cents. There isn’t much demand but we are hoping it will increase towards the end of the month. Also, we have passion fruits to export, but it’s less production. 1000 to 2,000 kg of the fruit is removed every fifteen days, and with high quality,” says Velez.

The company also sells papaya worldwide due to the ideal climate of Ecuador that allows for cultivation of an array of exotic fruit. “Our granadillas, pineapples as well as other fruits are suitable for exporting to Germany. They can export it into Sweden, Canada, Spain as well as a few other countries. We are able to supply 2 containers of pineapple per 15 days. Current price is $7. 2kg box that contains passion fruit.”

Velez insists that customers must be cautious when sending fruits to overseas customers, that only wish to make payments after the fruit has arrive. “There is a significant amount of risk involved when you ship products to clients who are only looking to purchase it later, when it is delivered They know they are getting a quality product and there is nothing that comes from the warehouse as credit.”
