“Markets pay up to 10 times more than they did last year for mangoes”

The lack of mango supplies coming from Peru has led to the price of the fruit increase dramatically as compared to last year’s. “Prices as compared to 2022/2023 seasons have grown dramatically because of the shortage of mango. The markets are charging between six and ten more than they did last year,” says Geancarlos Solorzano who is the Logistics Manager of G&S Agroexport, in Peru.

He says they’re packaging and exporting mangoes out of Piura in northern Peru. “We are at the moment packing Piura located in north Peru Piura is the very first city in which mangoes are picked to then be shipped in Casma within the department of Ancash.”

Solorzano highlights his findings that the Peruvian Association of Mango Producers (Promango) states that the current situation in the mango export and production in Peru is vital as the 2023-2024 season will see a drop of 80percent in volume because of the impacts from El Nino. El Nino phenomenon.

Despite the tough season they’ve unveiled a brand fresh mango brand. “We introduced our 2nd mark “MAMAY”. It’s an Quechua word that comes from the indigenous language spoken across several areas of Peru which means “MAMA”. Through the development of this brand, we hope to honor the labor that women of the field are doing when they cultivate the soil and thanks to this, we will be able to enjoy what they have produced. The tagline is “From mother Earth up to your Table’.

We as a business are always looking to provide things that are different to our clients in addition to the high-quality that we provide, we make sure to make sure that customers are known as a “brand” which is the reason we provide a trademark under the name “MAMAY”. To give you an identity, or distinctiveness in the market you are selling. Then, despite the scarcity of mango We have successfully introduced the brand, and we are confident that during the campaign we’ll also launch different commercial brands.”

Solorzano claims they’re focused exclusively on exporting mangoes to their European market. “Our customers are exclusively European We know our business is growing, and at some point we’ll be entering the American as well as Asian market. For now, we’re sending our goods in Spain, France and possibly to a few customers who are located in Italy as well as Holland. Our main focus will be Spain.”

They are thankful to have mangoes for harvesting and export. Many producers are unable to harvest their mangoes because of the blooming which was impacted by the hot. “Thank God for our harvest, we’re being competitive in the marketplace and are able to deliver our products. We’ll try to complete the 2023/2024 period, however knowing that there will be very little fruit however, we are blessed by God’s grace. We know that God is going to give us the fruits, so we’ll continue the way we’ve been doing up to now. The season could last till the month of June or May, but it remains uncertain. However, what we know is that for as prolonged as the weather continues to be good we’ll try to go on and we will continue to export other agricultural products,” Says a hopeful Solorzano.
