Mango production faces difficulties in Taiwan

In March, two townships in Yuli as well as Zhouxi located in Hualien, Taiwan, faced cooler temperatures. This affected mango orchards through a decrease in the production of flowers. The result was lower rate of pollination, leading to the mangoes to be malformed or even a total absence of fruits. To address the issue officials from the Hualien County Government sought financial assistance through the Ministry of Agriculture to support the affected mango farmers. A statement made on the 7th of May indicated that assistance in the amount in the amount of NT$100,000.00 (US$3,000) for a hectare will be provided to farmers suffering.

From May 8 to May 17 mango farmers from Hualien are eligible to apply for loan or financial assistance, as well as loan with low interest at their district offices in Hualien in Hualien, according to CNA. Chen Shu-wen who is the director of the Hualien County Agriculture Department, stressed the necessity in adhering to the guidelines concerning natural disaster relief and the conditions in the Article 5 of Agricultural Development Act. The law requires applicants be involved in the production of agricultural products and suffered losses of more than 20% in order to be eligible to receive aid. Eligibility for aid in times of disaster only once each calendar year. This is a crucial timeframe since the mango harvesting season starts in May and a lot of farmers are in the midst of financial loss that is significant due to low yields.
