Despite some uncertainties with the weather earlier in the year, the Polish apple orchards seem to have recovered, although some more than others, says Emilia Lewandowska, office manager for Polish apple exporter Fruit-Group: “Following the spring frosts, the Polish apple orchards were protected and treated, in order to save as much of the crop as possible. Secondary blossoms appeared after the frost and have helped to produce fruit. Some orchards, that initially seemed to have no crop, are now expected to harvest around 20% of a normal yield.”

There’s quite a bit of variation expected on the yields, depending on the regions in Poland, Lewandowska explains. “It’s important to note that at the end of April we experienced a freeze rather than a frost. In some parts of Poland, temperatures dropped to -15°C. In areas around our company, where temperatures reached -3°C, the harvest should be normal. However, where temperatures fell to -7°C, yields are expected to reach only 30% to 40% of a normal crop.”
The Polish apple growers are not completely out of the woods yet, as there is still potential for hail damages, Lewandowska emphasizes: “We’ve passed the June fruit drop, but the hail season is still ahead, so it’s too early to assess the final crop. At this stage, we know that some orchards will have a normal harvest, while others have suffered losses of 80% to 90%. The most affected varieties are Jonagold, Jonaprince and Ligol. However the, Gala and Idared varieties are expected to have normal crops.”

“The quality of Polish apples has reached a level that allows us to supply distant export markets. We’re seeing growing interest in Polish Gala apples, with a clearer market picture expected in September. The main challenges will be large fruit sizes in Jonagold, Jonaprince, Ligol and Lobo, and the storage of fruit, as not all apples affected by the spring frosts will be suitable for long-term storage. We also expect this season to be more challenging than the previous one in general. However, the expected normal Gala harvest is a positive sign for the upcoming season,” Lewandowska concludes.
