Greening diseases are spreading across Brazil causes Greek prices for oranges higher

Extreme weather conditions in the summer months did not cause any significant damage to the production of citrus in Greece as per Nick Nafpliotis, company director of the exporter of fresh produce Greek & Fresh: “Greece experienced extremely hot weather during July. However, the Clementines were fortunate to not be affected by the heat and neither was the frost. In general the good quality of Greek citrus as well as Clementines is extremely high this year. The quantity is a little lower than last year and we’re experiencing the drop to about 10 percent, but it’s just a slight difference”.

The predicament halfway around the globe has an enormous impact on citrus season in Greece as well as Europe, Nafpliotis explains. “According the research group Fundecitrus it is the speedy growth of greening diseases in Brazil is believed to be affecting around 38percent of the country’s total production region, could see yields decrease by as much as 60 percent in the coming five years. The reason for this is Reuters. In addition, as per CitrusBR the group that represents Brazil’s largest citrus growers The inventory of orange juice of Brazilian processors are currently at its lowest point in the past twelve years because of both weather and the effects of greening.”

“As consequently as a result, we can see that the cost of the industrial use of oranges have risen significantly so far and will surely affect table oranges, too. In Greece for instance the cost of selling industrial oranges has almost tripled from last year. That means we can are expecting to see significant rises in the prices of oranges for at least the start in the new season. The main market include Romania, Hungary, Czech and the Baltics. I believe that Greece is able to retain the EU market share and service the majority of its customers with no difficulties,” Nafpliotis concludes.
