Ecuador is seeking to settle the issue of exports of bananas with Russia

A Ecuadorian team is scheduled to go to Russia in order to resolve issues affecting exports of bananas to Russia according to The Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry announced. This mission will address phytosanitary concerns that were raised within six months before, and affecting the flow of exports of bananas into Russia.

The concern was raised in Russian’s Federal Service of Veterinary and Phytosanitary Supervision (Rosselkhoznadzor) because of to the repeated discovery of the Megaselia insect, which is a pest that has been quarantined and contaminant in exports from Ecuador. Rosselkhoznadzor has demanded a suspension on certification of bananas coming from five main Ecuadorian exporters to stop any further infringements. To address the issue, Russia is exploring alternative producers of bananas, including Egypt, China, Korea and Thailand as well as India eager to fill the gap on market Russian market.
