The continuous rains have a negative impact on Navi Mumbai onions and their price

Market traders in the market for potatoes and onions in the Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) in Vashi are suffering massive losses after tonnes of onions were soaked in the rain. The majority of the items were unable to be offered for sale.

The constant rain since last weekend is affecting the crops which was delivered to the market. According to the traders, the onions they taken in were heavily soaked by the rain. Moreover, because of the rain, fewer people have come to shop in the market.

An entrepreneur told me that, on the Monday the total number of 85 trucks carrying onions been delivered to the market, and the majority of them arrived in a state of wetness. This meant that top high-quality onions were offered at a price of Rs12-14 per kilo, normal and medium-grade onions cost the rate of Rs5-8 per kilo, whereas the onions that had suffered the greatest damage had to be offered for Rs.3 to a kilogram.
