Colombian exporter of bananas under scrutiny for alleged links to trafficking in drugs

Colombian Banana exporter Banacol faces scrutiny for claims of involvement in transporting massive cocaine shipment to Italian organised crime. Banacol has been linked with various Colombian political figures such as former President Alvaro Uribe and Medellin’s elected Mayor, Federico Gutierrez.

Italian officials reconstructed the timeframe of an enormous shipment of 226 kilograms of cocaine hidden in banana containers, and transported into Europe between 2020 between 2021 and 2020. The shady scheme was the result of a partnership between Italian criminal cartel Ndrangheta that controls 80percent of the cocaine trade throughout Europe in addition to an additional Italian mafia group, Camorra. The shipment was made within Turbo, Antioquia, a area where Banacol is headquartered.
