Checkers, BerryWorld, and Discovery Vitality have partnered to bring Booberries™ to South African shoppers, using blueberry sales to support breast cancer awareness and access to screening services.

During Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, limited-edition Booberries cups of locally grown blueberries will be available exclusively at Checkers stores nationwide.

For every cup sold, BerryWorld and Checkers will each donate R1, contributing a combined R2 per cup to PinkDrive, a non-profit organisation providing breast-health education and screening services to people who are medically uninsured or face barriers to accessing healthcare. Its mobile health units provide clinical breast examinations, mammograms, and health education. Discovery Vitality will also make a donation to PinkDrive.© Checkers

The cups include a QR code linking shoppers to breast-health resources and information about screening and early detection.

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed invasive cancer among South African women. National Cancer Registry data recorded 11,262 cases of female breast cancer in 2024, with a lifetime risk of 1 in 28. The Council for Medical Schemes reports that male breast cancer accounts for approximately 1.8% of breast cancer cases in South Africa, compared with less than 1% globally.

Through the partnership with PinkDrive, more than 150 women across two BerryWorld grower farms in the Western Cape recently received breast-health education and clinical breast examinations.

Booberries builds on a BerryWorld breast cancer awareness campaign launched in the UK in 2024 and subsequently expanded into European markets including France and Norway.

Discovery Vitality also encourages eligible members to complete preventive screenings. Female Vitality members aged 40 and older can earn 2,500 Vitality points for completing a mammogram.

Through the Vitality HealthyFood benefit, members can earn up to 25% back in Discovery Miles when buying blueberries at Checkers, increasing to up to 75% back when paying with a qualifying Discovery Bank card. The HealthyFood range includes more than 2,500 products, including Booberries.
