Berry Blue LLC. along with the University of Florida sign research agreement

Berry Blue LLC., a subsidiary of the MBG Marketing company, has made public its collaboration together with University of Florida Blueberry Breeding Program to study and create innovative and unique late-season blueberry varieties from the southern highbush. The collaboration will combine the knowledge of both groups to develop distinctive blueberry varieties that are not available on the marketplace for later in the months of May and June.

The University of Florida Blueberry Breeding Program is a proven track record of creating successful cultivars for blueberries and Berry Blue is committed to bringing together the expertise from both breed programs in providing these new cultivars to blueberry cultivators. In this collaboration both organizations are working together to create blueberry cultivars that do not just possess improved agronomic characteristics as well as enhanced popularity with consumers.

“We are thrilled to have the privilege of working in The University of Florida Blueberry Breeding Program,” said Brad Moorer CEO and President for Berry Blue LLC. as well as MBG Marketing. “Their experience in breeding blueberries is incredibly significant in the field. We’re excited to join our breeding and technological efforts in order to offer transformative cultivars to MBG cultivators.”

MBG is expected to leverage the benefits from this collaboration with Berry Blue and the University of Florida Blueberry Breeding Program within its very successful blueberry program in the southeastern region. MBG sells its products under the Naturipe label.

“This multi-year and multi-million dollar investment in new varieties affirms the dedication that MBG owners and growers have taken to creating new varieties for the future of the berry industry,” states Moorer.

“This is an exciting development in the field of blueberries from southern highbush. We will provide the finest quality and best taste berries to retail stores and customers around the globe.” “When Brad approached me with this idea I became very excited about the potential of further advancing the work we’ve conducted to help Florida producers. Through this venture we’ll use our experience and knowledge to create blueberry varieties that have excellent yields and perfect quality characteristics. This will be a complement to our work that we’ve been doing , and will carry on doing the same in Florida. That means that we can use the funding we received to design cultivars that will be suitable for the time after this Florida season. We wouldn’t be able to carry out this task without the assistance by Berry Blue and MBG,” stated Patricio Munoz, Blueberry Breeder at the University of Florida.
