Belarus restricts apple imports from outside Eurasian Economic Union

Belarus has introduced restrictions on apple imports from countries outside the Eurasian Economic Union. One-time import licenses will be issued by the Ministry of Antimonopoly Regulation and Trade in agreement with the Ministry of Agriculture and Food.

The government attributed the measure to a high domestic apple harvest and the need to supply the Belarusian market with locally grown fruit.

In previous years, Belarus was not always able to supply the domestic market with apples until the new harvest. The government therefore periodically introduced licensing requirements for apple exports from the country.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Food previously announced plans to stop purchasing certain types of food from so-called “unfriendly countries” within the next five years. Apples were included on the list.

Poland traditionally accounts for a large share of Belarusian apple imports. In 2025, Belarus imported US$51.8 million worth of Polish apples, compared with US$37.8 million in 2024.

On September 22, Piotr Parkhomchyk, chairman of the Brest Regional Executive Committee, proposed immediately halting apple imports into Belarus.
