U.S. retail ads highlight apples, pears, and fall vegetables

This week, much of the summer produce gave way to fall favorites as retailers shifted their displays. Additional varieties of apples and pears, especially those suited for baking, joined the traditional selections.

Advertising for potatoes and onions increased, alongside specials on cool-weather vegetables such as broccoli, carrots, celery, and cauliflower. Pumpkins, hard squash, and potted mums added seasonal color, while seasonal treats, costumes, and decorations began to take up more ad space in store flyers.

Total ad numbers this week reached 292,593, a 1% increase from last week’s 289,953. For the same week last year, the total was slightly higher at 295,942. By commodity group, the ads were distributed as follows: fruit 155,844 (53%), onions and potatoes 24,908 (9%), vegetables 103,567 (35%), herbs 1,241, ornamentals 2,003, hemp 2,798, and honey 3,473. Ads for organic produce totaled 42,483, accounting for 15% of all ads.

Price changes for major advertised items (3,000 or more ads) compared to the same week last year included a 12% increase for Honeycrisp apples (per lb.) and a 10% increase for Gala apples (3 lb. bag). Bartlett pears (per lb.) decreased by 18% and avocados (each) fell by 13%. Potatoes and onions showed no significant changes in price this week. For vegetables, there were no notable increases, but pumpkins (each) declined by 11%.
