Türkiye is expected to increase cherry exports this season, supported by higher production volumes following improved crop conditions.
According to data from the Turkish Exporters Assembly (TİM) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the western Mediterranean region remains the country’s main cherry production and export area.
Mehmet Ali Can, head of the Western Mediterranean Exporters’ Association (BAİB), said the harvest season started later than usual due to climatic conditions. While harvesting typically runs from late May until the end of July, the season is now expected to continue through the end of August.
Türkiye produces approximately 700,000 tons of cherries annually, making it the world’s largest cherry producer. Export volumes generally range between 60,000 and 70,000 tons.
According to Can, crop volumes are higher this year following losses caused by severe agricultural frost during the previous season. He said production levels are expected to support export growth during the current campaign.
Türkiye exported cherries worth US$210 million in 2024, with the western Mediterranean region accounting for US$91 million of that total. In the previous year, cherry exports reached US$48 million, of which US$22 million originated from the same region.
Europe and Russia remain the main export destinations for Turkish cherries. The country also ships cherries to Singapore, Malaysia, Dubai, and several markets in the Far East and Middle East.
Industry efforts are also underway to expand cherry exports to China as exporters seek additional market opportunities.
