The onion harvest at Premium Fresh in Tasmania is over for another season. “Our own crop is down on yield, but up in quality this season,” said Jim Ertler, from Premium Fresh.
“All of our onions have already arrived in the EU. The market was ok, but there was a lot of domestic supply still around. Things started to improve towards the end of the import season. Onion exports from New Zealand also faced challenges, but again, it started to come good towards the end of the import season.”
According to Jim, the Southeast Asian market has also been challenging, as there are a lot of Chinese onions coming in at good low prices.
“The Australian domestic market is running reasonably well, and there is the potential for it to get better in the next three months. The mainland has been very hot, which may cause some issues with quality going forward. I think there will be a two-tier market emerging with both poor and quality onions on the market, and we hope to be in the premium market.”
“In short, it has been a mixed bag, nothing exceptional or overly good.”
Shipping
“Shipping remains challenging, it always is. We had the standard delays, but nothing too surprising.”
