India’s mango exports faced production and logistics hurdles. Early hopes for a strong harvest were dashed by adverse weather, particularly in the Konkan belt, where rains in the peak season of May cut yields. According to Manoj Barai, Director at M K Exports, “The 2025 mango season was not as great as the previous year, with production hampered by unfavourable climatic conditions.”
“Output fell 18-22% compared to 2024. The season saw prices rise by 10-15% due to short supply and a 15% spike in air freight costs. As production was low and freight was on the higher end, export prices had to be adjusted accordingly,” he added.
Barai further explained that air freight grew costlier as the season progressed. “Even though the season was not good, we had to buy higher freight to fulfill buyers’ demands.” Geopolitical tensions and U.S.-India tariff uncertainties added pressure, while strict U.S. scrutiny over documentation slowed shipments.” He added that securing vapor heat treatment (VHT) slots for the U.S. and New Zealand was also tough, requiring meticulous planning. “We took extra precautions and spent more hours on executing shipments, especially for the USA.”
Despite facing these headwinds, a silver lining emerged with non-premium mango varieties. “Alphonso’s struggles opened doors for Laxman Bhog, Malda, Langra, Chausa, Dusheri, and Himyat, which saw strong demand in the UK, Qatar, Oman, Europe, and Singapore.” Barai highlights that this shift cushioned the blow of lower Alphonso volumes. “Non-Alphonso mangoes found a ready export market, with countries like Europe and Singapore openly accepting them,” he added.
“With Kesar and Alphonso seasons ending, we will focus on the new varieties in export markets like the UK, U.S., New Zealand, Canada, and Europe. For exporters like us, this acceptance of non-premium varieties signals new opportunities while dealing with climate and cost challenges,” Barai concludes.
