Mild impact of strikes on Iranian fresh produce exports

For the past five days, the armies of Iran and Israel have been engaged in continuous and intense strikes. On the Iranian side, as far as fresh produce is concerned, the impact of the situation is minimal. However, exporters fear the worst while the situation is escalating rapidly and dangerously.

Amirhossein Mirzahi, an Iranian exporter of general fresh produce, says: “The situation is uncertain. The attacks are brutal, and the campaign is becoming very complicated. We are proceeding with great caution in our operations.”

Initially, the capital Tehran was the target of missiles, but the scope of the war then spread to other regions such as Tabriz, Shiraz, Isfahan, Hamadan, and others, with Tehran being the most affected. Mirzahi says, “The production areas are not affected, nor are our facilities. On the production level, growers have no problems with agricultural operations or supplies.”

Airlines very quickly suspended flights after the outbreak of strikes, halting air exports. Mirzahi adds: “If it’s by air shipment, there is no exportation at the moment. Exporters can, however, deliver by sea or via border crossing. Ports and logistics in general are still operational, and deliveries are going as normal.”

“We can only hope for a quick return to calm and clarity,” concludes Mirzahi. As far as fresh produce is concerned, given the timing, the situation mainly affects stone fruits such as cherries and nectarines, in addition to melons, strawberries, and some vegetables like peppers and garlic. It is highly likely that the kiwi season, which is about to begin, will also be of concern.
