“Larger sized cherries will not be as widely available as the smaller sized ones”

Despite a later start, the Turkish cherry season is now in full swing, says Alper Kerim, owner of Turkish fruit exporter Demir Fresh Fruits (DFF): “The Turkish cherry season is going very well so far. The season did start 15 days later this year, but the kickoff was accompanied by solid demand, especially for our branded DeBa cherries. Thankfully, the supply for cherries is good enough this season, and prices are actually rather suitable and workable. The demand is getting stronger by the day, because the Greek and Spanish cherry seasons are about to come to a close.”

As trees carry more cherries this season, their sizes aren’t as big, Kerim explains. “Looking at the stuff that is a little more challenging this season, we can’t ignore the sizes of the cherries. Because there is such a large amount of cherries on the trees, the individual cherries aren’t able to grow to the larger sizes, which means the larger sized cherries will not be as widely available as the smaller sized ones. On a positive note, cherry prices are good for this year and workable for export.”

Kerim emphasizes that the exporter would love to export cherries to China as well, but for that to happen, the two countries will need to set up a protocol: “For our cherries, we focus mostly on European and Asian countries to export. We did some volume to the Dubai market as well, but exporting to Dubai is always risky, as one has to avoid a few of the scamming companies. Exporters must be careful! That being said, we already ship our cherries to 12 different countries, but of course we would like to export to China as well. For that to happen, regulations between the two countries must be solved first; once that is done, we will definitely move our focus to the Chinese market.”

“As Demir Fresh Fruit, we aim to export three times as much volume compared to the previous year, and want to become the top Turkish cherry exporter in the next three years!” Kerim concludes.
