Japan advances review of U.S. potato import restrictions

Japan is moving forward with procedures that could lead to expanded market access for U.S. potatoes following a renewed request from the United States.

Senior Japanese officials discussed the issue during a visit to the U.S. earlier this month. Japan currently restricts imports of most raw potatoes due to phytosanitary concerns related to diseases and pests.

Japan’s agriculture ministry is expected to identify the relevant diseases and pests at a meeting on Friday. The process will then move to discussions on specific risk-mitigation measures.

Some representatives of the U.S. potato sector have said Japan has taken too long to respond to the request.

Japanese potato growers and other stakeholders oppose lifting the restrictions, citing potential impacts on the country’s agricultural sector.

The agriculture ministry said it is proceeding with the assessment based on scientific evidence.
