
Unseasonal rainfall between October 19 and 26 has caused widespread damage to onion crops in Maharashtra’s Nashik district, according to preliminary figures from the state agriculture department. The rains affected more than 100,000 farmers across 901 villages, damaging crops on 48,324 hectares in total.
Deputy Director of Agriculture for Nashik district, Mahesh Vethekar, said that “the rainfall that lashed parts of Nashik district last week damaged crops like onions, among others, of over 48,324.3 hectares.”
Onions were among the worst affected, with damage recorded on 14,096 hectares. Both standing and harvested onions sustained losses, particularly in Baglan and Deola talukas. Baglan reported crop losses across 16,149 hectares, impacting 33,349 farmers in 126 villages, while Deola saw 14,070 hectares affected, with 28,061 farmers impacted across 46 villages.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Nashik, forecasting thunderstorms with lightning, light to moderate rainfall, and gusty winds of 30–40 km/h at isolated locations between Tuesday and Thursday.
