“Experimentation, innovation, training, and quality are the current guidelines of the MelaPiù Consortium, which was founded 31 years ago to disseminate the values of lowland apple-growing. We are located in the heart of Emilia-Romagna, and more precisely in the territories of Ferrara, Ravenna, Forlì-Cesena, and Bologna,” began Mazzoni. Members of the Consortium are Afe Ferrara, Apo Conerpo, Naturitalia, Cico, and Patfrut.

“The bet of a lowland product of premium quality, with high organoleptic qualities and its own precise identity, has been very well received by the market over the past few years. We have enhanced a long-standing tradition of apple production in these territories, adding the Fuji and Gala varieties. This is not a static project; on the contrary, it looks to the future with the study of new varieties as well as genetic improvement, and with the aim of obtaining the PGI mark”.

Two varieties are the protagonists of the MelaPiù project. First of all, Fuji, a late variety, is ideal for cultivation in lowland environments where temperatures remain high for longer periods. It is harvested at the end of September and marketed from October, with peak sales expected in late winter-early spring.

A couple of years ago, the project welcomed the MelaPiù Gala variety, the first to be harvested and therefore known as a summer apple. Cultivated in the same regional areas as Fuji, its commercial campaign starts in August and continues until December. In collaboration with the Navarra Foundation, the MelaPiù Consortium is engaged in a twofold direction on the product experimentation and innovation front through the study of new product varieties, as well as in genetic improvement with new clones of the Fuji variety.

At the same time, the path towards obtaining the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) mark continues to protect the peculiarity of this product that is intimately linked to its territory of origin.
