“We have limes 12 months of the year, regardless of the price”

The lime market has been in a bit of a slump for the last few weeks. “The market has been oversupplied and demand has been poor, which has led to low prices,” said Daniel Badger, Managing Director at Vitafresh Produce.

“This has all changed now as supply is falling off and demand is increasing. We mostly source our limes from Brazil, where it is now winter and the weather is colder, which has caused a drop in production. During my travels, I have been lucky enough to visit other countries where I have developed other sources for limes. We now have arrivals from Mexico and Colombia, the limes from these countries are a really nice green colour.”

According to Daniel, the prices in the UK and Europe have doubled in the last ten days, due to less supply, hot weather, and the holiday season.

“Production in the supply countries has been lower, and there has been rain in Mexico and in Colombia. We are now bringing in 3-4 containers per week to the UK and two per week into Holland. We hope to have the product at the right time when the market is high. After many months of low prices, it will be welcome.”

According to Daniel, the lime market is well known for being volatile, “Prices can go from £4 a box one week to £12 a box the next. We have limes for 12 months of the year, regardless of the prices. We have had some programs going, but it is very difficult to fix volumes and prices. People often want the lowest prices, but you have to look at the prices over the whole year.”
