Most of the Italian pears have been harvested, and now it is time for the pears from the other hemisphere to take center stage. One of the companies with the most experience in importing pears is Ceccarelli Giulio from Longiano, province of Forlì-Cesena, Emilia Romagna, owner of the Italian brand Julius.
“We waited a few weeks longer than usual,” explains Ettore Ceccarelli, “before we started to launch overseas production, as the Italian pears were nearing their end. But we are now in the sales phase. Like Julius, we now have Abate and William from South Africa, that we sell in Italy and export to the whole of Europe. Other countries of origin could be Argentina and Chile.”

Ceccarelli points out that the Julius pears will be available through July, both in Italy and for importers from other countries, such as Germany. “Although it is on the upswing,” Ceccarelli points out, “Italian production in 2024 was still far from the potential that was expressed in the past. At the same time, domestic consumption does not seem to be very high. In fact, until a few days ago, Italian pears were still on the shelves.”
“Maybe it is time for a new approach to the whole system. I will never forget what a former director of the cooperative, who is no longer with us, used to say: Abate pears must be ready by Christmas if you want to sell good quality fruit. In fact, the organoleptic quality of pears deteriorates the more months they spend in cold storage due to the lack of appropriate post-harvest treatments. A solution has to be found,” he says.
“We can offer our customers continuity,” concludes Ceccarelli, “thanks to agreements with overseas producers who can guarantee pears with a high organoleptic level.”
