The table grape growing season has developed exceptionally well so far for the growers of Corinth, one of the most important regions for this crop in Greece. According to Mr. Markos Leggas, president of the local Pegasus Agrifood Coop, “Until mid-June, the grapevines have been sufficiently watered by the appropriate type of rainfall that has occurred so far. The orchard conditions are nothing like what we experienced in previous seasons. What we now need is two more rainfalls—one in June and another towards the end of July—in order to secure the favorable outlook.”
However, Mr. Leggas introduces two caveats to this scenario: “The first has to do with the precise timing of these expected rainfalls, so they do not interfere with the harvest of early varieties, such as Prime. The second is that we must avoid extreme and prolonged heat waves during the summer. Such conditions would necessitate technical irrigation, but the water reserves in Corinth are far from sufficient to meet all the needs.”
At present, cultivation treatments are still ongoing in some estates, while in others they have already been completed. “It appears that the harvest of Soultanina (Thompson Seedless), the dominant variety in our region, will be later than it was last season. We are expecting a normal production calendar. This means the first fruits will be harvested during the first ten days of August, and the main crop will become available between August 15 and 20. This timing benefits our sales, as demand for Soultanina increases from September 1st,” the Greek cooperative executive stresses. “Another late variety that has expanded its presence in Corinth this season is Late Pearl,” he adds.
Finally, it was almost exactly one year ago that the packing plant of Pegasus Agrifood Coop was devastated by fire. Nevertheless, the cooperative declares itself ready to meet its clients’ needs. “We are operating in a rented facility, and we are fully prepared to serve all our customers. Next season, our new packing plant will be ready to welcome us, and it will be an upgrade compared to the previous one,” Mr. Leggas concludes.
