
Tupai King, known as Squirrel King, has emerged as Malaysia’s most expensive durian variety, surpassing Musang King and Black Thorn. This premium durian is priced at up to $30.25 per kilogram. Eric Yeap, a grower from Penang, highlighted its recent rise in popularity among local and international enthusiasts, particularly from Singapore and China. “Fans from Singapore and China now actively seek out Tupai King, with some even contacting me directly once the durian season begins,” Yeap noted.
Penang, a key durian-producing region, hosts orchards cultivating varieties like Black Thorn and Musang King. Tupai King is distinguished by its slim, egg-shaped appearance and unique opening method from the top. Its greenish flesh with a blue-black hue offers a more bitter flavor with an alcoholic hint compared to Musang King. Despite increasing demand, supply is limited due to the recent cultivation of the variety. Durian specialist Chew Chee Wan, who holds the official certificate for Tupai King, shared that it takes time to cultivate mature trees capable of yielding fruit.
Yeap estimates a three to four-year timeline for commercial-scale production as more Malaysian farmers begin planting Tupai King. He stated, “It’s a long-term investment, but the payoff looks promising.” However, the region faces challenges from climate change, with heavier-than-usual rainfall affecting crop yields. According to the Malay Mail, unpredictable weather has disrupted flower blooming, potentially reducing yields by up to 30% this season. Yeap added, “The season also started late this year, as usually the season starts in late April, but we are only starting to get the early batches of durians now.”
