Caroline García, manager of the Dominican company Caribio Fresh Fruit, confirmed that the current season has been “very good,” despite the challenges that the sector is facing. The company, which specializes in conventional and organic bananas, exports mainly to the United States, Spain, Germany, and Switzerland, and is getting ready to expand its presence in the Caribbean, the Middle East, and Turkey before the end of the year.
“We are gradually increasing our export volumes and we expect sustained growth next year,” says García, who stresses that the country’s production is currently in the process of recovering from the impact of storms. Although the quality of the fruit has remarkably improved, volumes have yet to reach their previous levels.

One of the main challenges for Caribio Fresh Fruit is labor. Most of the workers come from the neighboring country and, according to García, “keeping them happy and regularized isn’t always easy, especially due to a lack of documentation.” In any case, the company remains committed to improving working conditions and staff welfare, aware that “a successful harvest depends on the commitment of those who work in the fields.”
As far as prices are concerned, conventional bananas currently cost 11.5 dollars per box, while organic bananas show an upward trend of between 60 and 70 cents for the coming year. García acknowledges that the Dominican Republic isn’t the only one affected by the rising prices in the global market. “Increases are being reported throughout Latin America, especially due to the adjustments in certifications such as Fairtrade.”

Caribio Fresh Fruit also stands out for its regular focus on sustainability. “We avoid harmful pesticides, we are constantly improving our packaging, and we try to have a positive impact on the surrounding communities,” says the manager.
Despite high logistical costs and declining banana consumption in some markets, the company is confident that geographic diversification, especially to the Bahamas and other Caribbean islands, will offer new opportunities. “Given the proximity, demand, and response capacity, we believe we can meet those markets’ needs,” says Garcia.
“We are doing better than in previous years. The recovery continues and the future is looking bright for Dominican bananas,” says García.
