Panama Canal records revenue and traffic growth in 2025

The Panama Canal closed fiscal year 2025 (FY2025) with growth in revenues, tonnage, and vessel transits. Total revenues reached B/.5.705 billion (about US$5.705 billion), 14.4% above the B/.4.986 billion (US$4.986 billion) recorded in FY2024. Preliminary unaudited figures reflect an increase in both financial and operational results.

Net profit was B/.4.134 billion (US$4.134 billion), exceeding budget projections by B/.372 million (US$372 million) and up from B/.3.439 billion (US$3.439 billion) in FY2024.

The canal recorded 13,404 vessel transits, an increase of 19.3% compared to 11,240 in FY2024. Of this total, 3,342 were Neopanamax vessels and 10,062 Panamax vessels.

Cargo volumes totaled 489.1 million CP/SUAB tons, a 15.6% rise compared to 423.1 million tons in FY2024. Neopanamax vessels accounted for 253.6 million tons, while Panamax vessels carried 235.5 million tons. Container and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) shipments were the main drivers of growth, while bulk carriers continued to recover. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) volumes were below expectations, linked to international freight market costs.

Revenues also reflected extraordinary factors. Frontloading, or advance distribution, contributed about B/.100 million (US$100 million). The long-term slot allocation program (LoTSA) supported results by offsetting the impact of reduced LNG vessel transits.

According to canal authorities, the performance underlines its role in the national economy and ensures readiness for planned investments starting in 2026. These projects will target improvements in water capacity and competitiveness of the route.
