‘Oversupply led to discounts’

The tomato range continued to be dominated by Dutch and Belgian shipments. Italian and Spanish deliveries were also available. According to BLE, some domestic offers were also available. Availability had increased, with Dutch supplies in particular appearing to have intensified. Demand was not always able to keep pace with this, resulting in price reductions. These were sometimes quite substantial. Lower-quality produce, which was occasionally found in Berlin and Hamburg, also contributed to lower ratings. The low prices of goods in poor condition delayed the sale of regular loads. In addition, a wide price range established itself in some cases as a result of inconsistent organoleptic properties. Even high-quality domestic products were not entirely immune to falling prices.

Apples
German and Italian loads formed the basis of the assortment, although imports from overseas clearly expanded. As the quality left nothing to be desired, distributors were generally able to confirm their previous calls.

Pears
South African loads dominated, led by Forelle, Packham’s Triumph, and Abate Fetel. Availability was sufficient to meet uneventful demand. As a result, prices remained mostly at previous levels.

Table grapes
Chilean deliveries predominated and gained in importance. Due to the volume, sellers were not always able to maintain their previous prices.

Strawberries
German loads dominated ahead of Dutch ones. The availability of domestic produce expanded massively. Demand was unable to keep pace, although storage facilities had improved considerably as a result of the good weather.

Peaches and nectarines
The range slowly expanded: Spanish fruit dominated and was available in some grades. Demand was not particularly strong and could be met without any problems.

Apricots
Spanish supplies clearly dominated over Italian imports. Turkish imports expanded. And the French season started with the first deliveries.

Lemons
Deliveries increased noticeably. The intensified presence of South African offers has so far had no impact on the prices of Spanish competitors.

Bananas
Availability was sufficiently in line with accommodation capacity. As a result, prices generally remained at their previous level.

Cauliflower
Availability increased noticeably. It was sufficient to satisfy the moderate demand. The quality was generally good. Prices developed differently.

Lettuce
In the case of iceberg lettuce, domestic loads had displaced Spanish lettuce from the top of the range. With increased availability, prices often tended downward. Returns from food retailers caused occasional difficulties in placing regular items.

Cucumbers
Domestic supplies dominated the market for cucumbers. However, deliveries from the Netherlands and Belgium continued to play a major role.

Sweet peppers
Dutch supplies dominated, ahead of Turkish and Belgian supplies. Business was quiet, but prices often climbed.

Asparagus
Domestic deliveries clearly dominated. Polish loads supplemented the supply of white spears, while Dutch loads supplemented the supply of purple spears. In addition to German loads, Polish, Spanish, and Italian loads were also available for green asparagus.
