Oranges still available from Egypt

Some quantities of Egyptian oranges are still available for export, and a few exporters continue to work on oranges despite high prices, according to Mohamed Zekry from Agro Fruits Egypt.

To recall, the Egyptian orange season has experienced major disruptions and difficulties in fruit supply due to the emergence of orange concentrate factories in the country. Exporters were caught off guard on April 1, when they came back from Eid holiday to find that prices had reached unprecedented levels, even double those of the previous season, prompting many of them to cut the season short.

Zekry says, “Orange juice concentrate factories continue to absorb large volumes and have strong demand, particularly for small sizes, which has pushed up prices and limited the supply available for export. That said, we expect to finish the season as usual, in mid-August,” the exporter continues.

The exporter adds, “There is still demand in several markets, including Eastern Europe, Africa, the Gulf countries, and Western Europe. We have oranges in cold storage and continue to fulfill these orders. However, prices are high, at no less than $800 FOB per ton, and can reach $1,000.” Average prices last season were around $460.

“We are preparing for the next season to ensure supply for our international customers. We plan to purchase orange farms and secure more fruit early on the season,” Zekry concludes.
