Onion cold storage opens in Bacolor

A new onion cold storage facility, accommodating 20,000 bags, has been completed for Bacolor farmers at Barangay Cabalantian, Philippines. This facility, inaugurated on June 5, 2025, is intended to mitigate post-harvest losses and enhance the income streams of local onion growers.

The ceremony saw participation from the Department of Agriculture’s Assistant Secretary for Logistics, Daniel Alfonso Atayde, and the DA Regional Field Office III Executive Director, Dr. Eduardo L. Lapuz, Jr. The event also included representatives from the High Value Crops Development Program (HVCDP) alongside Bacolor officials—Mayor Eduardo G. Datu, Vice Mayor Ron Earvin Dungca, and Sangguniang Bayan members.

The Bacolor Onion Farmers Association (BOFA), consisting of 24 members cultivating onions and other high-value crops on 60.74 hectares, has been designated as the facility’s primary beneficiary. During the event, BOFA President Ferdinand R. Pineda stood for the farmer beneficiaries.

The storage aims to enhance crop quality by extending their shelf life and stabilizing supply within the market. This development tackles a persistent issue in local onion production.
