“Lower persimmon yields in Romagna but larger grades”

“As far as we are concerned, we have estimated a drop in production of between 30 and 40%, though there will be a good increase in average size, so the value of the final product will still be interesting,” reports Mirco Zoffoli, sales associate for the ‘Domenico Laghi’ company in Forlì.

“We have estimated a decrease in the Tipo persimmon yields of around 30 to 40% among our farmers, with a similar decrease for Rojo as well. This, however, also means plants are concentrating on fewer fruits, so the average weight of each fruit is increasing. This is a positive aspect from a commercial point of view, because prices are attractive from grade 24+ upwards.”

For Domenico Laghi, the marketing of Tipo persimmons will start at the end of September, and that of Rojo around 20th October. “We export a good quantity of our Tipo variety abroad. The most important transalpine market is Switzerland, while our sales channels in Italy are the big retail chains and wholesale markets.”

One of the company’s strengths lies in manual processing. “We have specialised staff who have been doing this job for over 10 years. Thanks to manual processing, the product remains unaffected and reaches the supermarkets in perfect condition.”

The farmers who produce Rojo and deliver it to Domenico Laghi are located in Puglia and Basilicata. “We also have a new variety, Ribera Sun, which is a mutation of Rojo. Its main characteristic is its size, which is on average 10% larger than the classic Rojo,”.
