The Ministry of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry of Kyrgyzstan is considering the introduction of temporary restrictions on potato imports following requests from the Association for the Development of the Agro-Industrial Complex and the Association “Potato Growers Cluster of the Kyrgyz Republic.”
According to data from the National Statistics Committee, Kyrgyzstan imported more than 28,000 tons of potatoes in the first eight months of 2025, mainly from China and Uzbekistan. During the same period last year, imports totaled only 500 tons, around 55 times lower than current levels.
Meanwhile, potato exports from Kyrgyzstan reached 20,900 tons over the same period, a decrease of 13,000 tons compared to the previous year. “The measure to restrict imports is necessary in connection with a possible increase in potato imports, which could lead to a decline in prices on the domestic market and cause damage to domestic producers,” the Ministry of Agriculture stated.
The ministry plans to introduce measures to protect the interests of local producers and stabilize the price situation in the domestic potato market. According to preliminary data, early and mid-early potato varieties have been harvested from 23,100 hectares, yielding a total of 381,500 tons with an average productivity of 165.3 centners per hectare.
The highest yields were recorded in the Issyk-Kul region at around 200 centners per hectare. In the Naryn region, harvesting began in the Kochkor district, where yields range between 180 and 200 centners per hectare, primarily from the “Jelly” and “Actress” varieties. In total, 64,600 hectares have been allocated for potato harvesting in 2025.
