The century-old Aroor Olor mango variety from Kozhikode’s Purameri region in Kerala is nearing recognition with a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, following confirmation from the state government that the process is in its final stage.
Responding to a submission in the state assembly by Kuttiady MLA K.P. Kunhammad Kutty, Agriculture Minister P. Prasad confirmed that the Kerala Agricultural University (KAU) has completed most of its study on the mango’s unique traits. “This GI tag is not just a label, but a passport for Aroor’s mangoes to the global market. We are committed to ensuring that our farmers receive fair value for their quality produce,” said Prasad.
The Aroor Olor mango, known for its fragrance and sweetness, has been cultivated for around a century. Its origin traces back to early planters such as the late Edakkatt Krishnan Vaidyar and Padinjarakkandi Kelappan Nair, who first introduced the variety to the Aroor region.
To manage certification and export processes once the GI tag is approved, local authorities are forming a dedicated organisation. Kutti announced that the Purameri panchayat will lead the establishment of a society consisting of Aroor Olor mango growers to oversee the next phase.
Sudeep Edakkatt, a local cultivator and president of the Aroor Olor Manga Ulpadaka Sangam, welcomed the move, noting that the GI tag could help protect the variety from imitation and price fluctuations. “We have been cultivating this unique mango for generations, often struggling against market price fluctuations and imitation products,” he said. “The GI tag, combined with the promised assistance from the welfare society, will finally protect our heritage and give us the tools we need to compete and thrive.”
The government’s plan also includes farmer training programmes focused on maintaining quality standards and potential collaborations with business consortia to promote the marketing and export of value-added mango and coconut products from the region.
