IIFT roundtable charts path to $100 billion agri exports

The Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT), in collaboration with Rural Voice Media Platform, organized a roundtable conference addressing “Realising the $100 Billion Agri Export Goal” at the IIFT campus in New Delhi. The event examined the hurdles, prospects, and strategies for doubling India’s agricultural exports by 2030.

In the welcome address, IIFT Vice Chancellor Prof. Rakesh Mohan Joshi stated that connecting to global markets requires sustained effort to remain competitive. Despite increasing agricultural production, India is also importing large quantities of various produce. Boosting exports necessitates improving product quality and ensuring stability in related policies.

The first session discussed “Challenges and Opportunities in Agricultural Exports.” APEDA Secretary Dr. Sudhanshu stressed the necessity for an organized value chain to boost exports. Challenges exist at the production level, and adopting Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) is crucial. As an example, efforts to extend litchi shelf life were highlighted. Banaras has been developed as an agri-export hub with export facilities and connections with FPOs. Currently, 1,000 tonnes of fruits and vegetables are exported from Banaras. Other landlocked areas are being developed similarly.

Agri-business expert and AgVaya Partner Siraj A. Chaudhary noted that India’s exports often stem from surplus rather than importer needs, resulting in limited, consistent exports. He emphasized identifying products with competitive advantages. Former major exports like soyameal, sugar, and maize are declining. There is a call for identifying products for long-term export viability, including fruits and vegetables. Strategizing product-based export targets was suggested.

Dr. P.K. Swain, National Vice President of the Indian Rice Exporters Federation, stated the importance of providing farmers with better seeds, technology, and financial resources to boost productivity. Export-oriented varieties are necessary, with an integrated cold chain infrastructure as a challenge.

Moderating, Rural Voice’s Chief Editor Harvir Singh highlighted that agricultural exports are vital for enhancing farm incomes, emphasizing beneficial transference to farmers. A special edition of Rural World focused on the $100 billion goal was released. Singh concluded by thanking participants and expressing a commitment to ongoing dialogues on agricultural issues.
