Greek kiwi harvest about to kick off

A lower production of Greek kiwis is expected, despite an increase in acreage, says Apostolos Tsinoglou, owner of the Greek fruit exporter Europe Export: “The Greek kiwifruit production seems to be down 20 per cent compared to previous seasons, this is mostly due to weather conditions. Thankfully, an increase in kiwi plantations will result in a new reduction of only 10 per cent, instead of the full 20. For this season, the reduction in production that we mentioned earlier is due to the March frosts, as well as dealing with a water shortage.”

The harvest of the early varieties will commence from next week, but the harvest of later varieties will be going on for several months from now, Tsinoglou explains. “The earliest kiwi varieties are the summer kiwi and green light, and their harvest starts at the end of August. From the 25th of August, it will be available for export. The next variety is Tsechelidis, and their harvests start in the second week of September once the brix levels have risen to 6.2. The next and main variety is the Hayward kiwi, of which the harvest begins on October 15th. There are some other varieties, such as yellow (Soreli) or red kiwis, but their production is not as widespread in Greece, although their cultivation has begun to increase more intensively in the last three to four years.”

According to Tsinoglou, demand for Greek kiwis keeps rising with every season that goes by: “Every year, the demand for Greek kiwifruit seems to be increasing in global markets and gaining ground. It is now possible for Greek kiwifruit to be distributed to global markets without intermediaries, and the current supply covers a large part of the demand.”

“Our company’s goals are to increase our sales by 10 to 15 per cent each year and to open our horizons to new markets such as Korea, Indonesia, Singapore, Canada, and the Scandinavian countries. To achieve the goals that we set for ourselves, we hired new people in the marketing department, we participate in as many fruit exhibitions as possible, and on September 30th, we will be in Madrid at Fruit with our Brand Europe Export and our new Brand BabyFruit 2016,” Tsinoglou concludes.

Europe Export will be exhibiting during Fruit Attraction in Madrid. You can find their booth in Hall 8, stand 8D02/05.
