The Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) has approved a new measure to temporarily exempt potatoes imported into Kazakhstan from customs duties. The decision, adopted by the EEC Council on May 23, 2025, was officially announced in Moscow and aims to stabilize the domestic retail market amid increased demand and supply challenges.
According to the amendment to the Customs Union’s unified customs and tariff regulations, up to 150,000 tonnes of potatoes can be imported into Kazakhstan without incurring import duties. This exemption applies exclusively to potatoes intended for retail sale.
Only registered retailers operating within Kazakhstan are eligible to benefit from this measure. These businesses are allowed to import and sell the duty-free potatoes directly to consumers, under the condition that the goods are stored at designated retail facilities. The exemption will remain in effect until June 30, 2025, and applies to goods released under the customs procedure for domestic consumption, provided that relevant customs declarations or pre-declaration release statements are registered with Kazakhstan’s customs authority within the specified timeframe.
