Chiquita to lay off last 1,189 workers in Panama

Chiquita announced it will release 1,189 day workers in Panama. This follows government authorization amid recent labor disruptions at its banana farms. Initial reductions occurred in late May, with 5,000 workers affected as Panamanians demonstrated against issues like a controversial social security reform impacting future pensions. By early June, the management had exited the country.
