Retail giant Carrefour has launched a new program, ‘Choose Better’, designed to empower Kenyan consumers to make healthier and more sustainable choices accessible and appealing. “The programme makes fresh, nutritious options more visible to customers and encourages better eating habits through enhanced labelling for products that are healthier, locally sourced, or environmentally sustainable”, reads a statement from the company. The company says over 680 fruit and vegetable products have already been tagged under the ‘Choose Better’ label across Carrefour stores and its mobile app, with more items to be added continuously.

Carrefour to sell Italy business, reports improving sales growth
Carrefour, Europe’s biggest food retailer, has agreed to sell its loss-making business in Italy to food and drinks manufacturer NewPrinces Group as part of a strategic review kicked off earlier this year. The sale of Carrefour Italy, which operates 1,188 stores but made a 67mln euro ($78.85mln) operating loss last year, will help boost Carrefour’s growth, profitability and cash generation, the French-based retailer said in a statement. The group’s first-half sales totalled 46.559bln euros, up from 44.863bln euros a year earlier. “Carrefour’s business saw a clear acceleration in the first half of 2025, driven by the momentum in its three core countries: France, Spain, and Brazil”, Carrefour CEO Alexandre Bompard said in a statement.

Tesco to start selling potatoes grown in low-carbon technology trials
Tesco plans to start selling potatoes and other crops grown on a farm hosting trials for emerging innovations that have potential to decarbonise food production. The supermarket recently unveiled its arable “low-carbon concept farm” in Lincolnshire, a multi-year commitment launched in January to test methods of reducing planet-heating greenhouse gas emissions caused by farming. Farmers recently started testing some of the new products and techniques on various crops in the fields of Langrick Farm, near Boston. Tesco is working in partnership with potato supplier Branston and collaborating with pea, wheat and broccoli suppliers on a seven-year crop rotation to minimise disease and boost soil health.

The switch to cardboard ensures a significant reduction in plastic use: in 2025, Delhaize already expects to save 17,000 kilograms of plastic and in the long run, when more growers switch to this type of packaging, the savings could reach 52,000 kilograms per year, says the retailer. C&S Wholesale Grocers is seeking to raise $400mln through a leveraged loan sale to help finance its $1.77bln acquisition of SpartanNash, according to reports. The company scheduled a lender call for the five-year loan offering on July 23, and investors must submit offers by August 5. Wells Fargo & Co. is managing the transaction. According to Bloomberg News, more than 50 loan offerings are currently in circulation, many of which could be priced by the end of the week. Canada: Discount segment drives Loblaw’s Q2 sales growth
Loblaw Cos. reported sales and earnings growth in its second quarter, driven in part by strong sales in the company’s hard-discount supermarkets.
