Procurement prices for China’s new-season apples remain at elevated levels. Mr. Zhou from Tangsen Technology, who is currently sourcing apples in Gansu, explained, “Supply is tight across several major production regions, including Shaanxi and Gansu. Many areas are facing shortages, resulting in fierce competition and driving up procurement prices. Current prices are significantly higher than in previous years, reaching the highest levels seen in recent seasons.”
“Starting with Gala apples at the beginning of the season, procurement prices have been 15%–20% higher than in previous years. The same trend applies to Huaniu apples and bagged Fuji apples, with bagged Fujis showing the most notable price increase compared with last year. For instance, in Luochuan, Shaanxi, premium Fuji apples in the #80–#90 size range are now priced at ¥18 (0.2US$) per kilogram at the farm gate.” In Jingning, Gansu Province, the purchase price of Fuji apples sized #80 and above is also 20%–30% higher than in previous years.

Mr. Zhou attributed the price rise to two main factors. “First, overall apple production has decreased this year. Second, the market outlook is generally positive, encouraging buyers to stock up early, which further pushes up prices. At present, consumers have shown strong acceptance of the quality and price of the new-season apples. High-quality, reasonably priced apples are particularly popular with distributors, and orders have been relatively steady.”

Unbagged Fuji apples
The harvest season for unbagged Fuji apples will begin in late October, and Mr. Zhou remains optimistic about market performance. “Due to the high labor costs associated with bagged Fuji apples, many large-scale orchards have switched to unbagged cultivation, increasing the overall planting area for unbagged Fujis. Based on observations from the Baiyin production area in Gansu, this year’s unbagged Fuji apples show noticeable improvements in surface smoothness, quality, and overall commercialization rate compared with previous years. While they are slightly less sweet than Aksu apples from Xinjiang, their production cost is relatively low, making them ideal for large-scale sales. Thanks to their excellent cost performance, this year’s unbagged Fuji apples are expected to be one of the highlights of the season.”

The export market continues to favor smaller sizes, particularly #60, #65, and #70, and Mr. Zhou noted that demand for apples meeting export standards remains strong.
